Robin Hood

If you were going to see this movie expecting to see men in tights, you might come away disappointed: this is not the Robin Hood we know from such movies as Prince of Thieves (and definitely not the one we know from Men in Tights!). A more appropriate title for the movie would have been "Robin Longstride" (Robin Hood's actual name), but that might not have the drawn the crowds sufficiently. This is an origin story for the character of Robin Hood. It shows us the how he became the legend of those other movies. This can be somewhat of a weakness (perhaps even it's most striking) of the movie, as we don't really see Robin Hood and his band of Merry Men until the very end. This means the movie can feel somewhat as if it ends at what really is the beginning.

VERSUS

Despite this, it is an enjoyable movie, the pacing is good and there is no time for any dull moments. The battle scenes are particularly thrilling, and are definitely some of the strongest points in the movie. The battles at the start and the end of the movie are particularly engaging. The movie does at times feel as if it is a medieval version of Gladiator, especially when Robin Hood makes a speech. Overall the acting is good, with the stand out being Cate Blanchett as Lady Marion. Russell Crowe makes a believable and tougher-than-usual Robin Hood, but his accent tends to waver between a number of flavours, including what sounds like Irish and Scottish.

All in all there is nothing truly bad in this movie, but there is also not that much that sets it apart from many other action movies. If you do find yourself at the cinema, unsure of what to watch, Robin Hood would make for an entertaining hour and a half.

Iron Man 2

Coming out of the cinema, I heard mixed impressions on this one. They varied from:
"That was awesome, 10x better than the first one! I wish I was Iron Man..." to "That was disappointing... I think the first one was much better."

I'll be sitting on the fence for the time being, because I think that both of these simplistic statements contain some truth. Iron Man 2 is a fast paced and aesthetically pleasing movie with lots of impressive visual effects. Among other scenes, I’m thinking of the one where Tony Stark dons his Iron Man suit “on-the-go” (his suit being conveniently stowed away in a suitcase like it was his gym gear). To me, that was more impressive than the mechanical blur in the "Transformers" movies. Cheesy dialogue, mushy plots and mainstream sense of humour make it for a really compelling and accessible movie for the wider audience. Iron Man/Tony Stark, now a celebrity superstar, makes an extraordinary entrance into the Stark Expo, with cheerleaders dancing and welcoming him. During the movie, Tony Stark goes on to claim that he has "Privatized World Peace" - catchy.

What was really disappointing for me was the lack of depth with the many new characters in Iron Man 2, despite the A-list cast. Superhero movies often make the mistake of involving too many (supposedly) important and popular characters, only to give them a few minutes of screen time. Mickey Rourke is brilliant as Ivan Vanko and I wish that his character was exploited a bit more. Sam Rockwell is also quite funny and entertaining as the villainous arms dealer that threatens Tony Stark’s empire. As for Robert Downey Jr's acting and presence, there is not much to complain about, as I cannot dissociate him from Tony Stark anymore. Obviously, it's a sequel, and there's always going to be comparisons with the original. But if we take it for what it is (an action movie - explosions!!!), I would say it was quite entertaining and I thoroughly enjoyed the show. Would recommend for a night out.

There was only one reason why I watched this movie... Jessica Alba. Everything else in this movie was garbage. The jokes fall short of their mark and I would rather cut the Queen’s toe nails than have to watch this movie again.

The Love Guru is about an American who was abandoned by his family and raised by Gurus in India. Seeking fame and fortune in the US with his methods of self help and love, his chance arrives when he is asked to reunite Darren Roanoke (a famous ice hockey player) with his estranged wife who has left him for Jacques Grande a Canadian bloke packing some heavy “artillery”. While helping Roanoke reunite with his wife, Guru Pitka too falls in love....

Rating: 3/10

Watch this movie only on DVD and only if there is absolutely nothing else to rent!

The Women (2008)

"The new comedy about finding out what you really want."

I won free tickets to catch this movie from the 30 Days of Fashion & Beauty and I almost didn't go to the cinema. The movie; which was an updated screenplay of George Cukor's 1939 movie with the same title; turns out to be better than I expected.

The characters are well defined and well played. The story unfolds appropriately. The scenes are quite funny at times. But I do have to say, however I look at it; it's still a chick flick. So guys - be warned. :) The best thing about it for me? There wasn't one inappropriate scene throughout the movie (nudity or extreme display of affection)!

All in all, save your $$$; this is more enjoyable to watch as a DVD.

"An Adventure Beyond the Ordinar-E"

The latest Anime from Pixar brings us to a distant future (albeit a not so realistic one), where mankind has abandoned earth because it has become covered with trash from products sold by the powerful multi-national Buy N Large corporation.

The main character, WALL-E (short for Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class), is a determined garbage collecting robot has been left to clean up the mess. WALL-E is alone on Earth except for a sprightly pet cockroach; mesmerized with collecting trinkets of earth's history and show tunes. That is until one day, Eve, the sleek search robot, arrives and changed WALL-E's life purpose.

For kids, the characters expressions' are very entertaining and the message of "eco-friendly and pro-exercise" is very well delivered. Even the way "WALL-E" & "Eve" call their names are very cute and catchy!

For adults, the animation is incredible to watch and the movie is extremely enjoyable. It's different, full of funny bits while delivering a heartbreakingly tender love story between these two very adorable and expressive main characters.

This is totally a highly recommended movie. [Even the Rotten Tomatoes rate it at 96%!!!] Try to catch this movie in the cinema, you'd appreciate the animation even more!

4 Narcissistic actors embark on a journey to make the best and most expensive war film ever! But with clashing egos and a ballooning movie budget, the director decides to throw his self absorbed actors deep into the jungles of Southeast Asia not realising the real danger which hides within...

This is a real humdinger with heaps of action, over the top comedy and one of the best intros to a movie! I have gained immense respect for Robert Downey Jr. after watching this movie. From his Australian accent, his role as an African American soldier and his “Award Winning” role in “Satan’s Alley” (this was a classic scene!), He puts in an unbelievable performance with some truly diverse and challenging roles which in my opinion he fully pulls off!

Special mention to Tom Cruise who surprised me with his hilarious performance!

Welcome to the Sticks (French) - Gemma

This movie was full on laughter from start to finish. Dany Boon wrote, directed and acted in this hilarious comedy about a postmaster who fakes a disability to get a prime job on the Riveria but gets caught and ends up in "the north". Everyone sympathises with him when they here because nobody wants to sent to "the north". His wife & son stay behind in the south. But when he discovers its not all bad, nobody believes him so he makes up the stories they want to here. All goes well until his wife decides to visit.

Its well-written comedy which takes everyday life and turns it into an hilarious ride. I loved all the characters. The english sub-titles are written in the quirky fashion that the people from "the north" speak. It might be a little hard to read initially but you get into the swing after a few lines. Top class entertainment (9.5/10).

Hellboy II - Gemma

Where would Hollywood be without remakes and sequels, eh ?? But aas sequels go, I'm glad they did this one. I really enjoyed the original and was not disappointed by number II. Excellent one-liners, lots of action, quirkiness and strange creatures !! Definitely worth a look (8/10).

If you are not into documentaries then don't bother reading any further !! Meanwhile, if like me, you love docos - especially ones about movie making - then you'll have a great laugh at this one. Quentin Tarantino features a LOT, talking about his obsession with Aussie cult movies from 70's and 80's. This was a time before "health and safety" and liability !! Where high speed chases were filmed by cameramen hanging off the back of a motorbike with no helmet.

The intermixed commentary from actors, film critics, celebrities and directors flows really well and I even missed some of the banter because the audience (including myself) were laughing so much.

With a very brief mention of the period pieces being filmed, this doco focuses on some of the worst and the best slasher, horror, porn and action movies to come out of Australia. Barry Humphries, Steve Bisley, Russell Boyd, Graeme Blundell, Sigrid Thornton, even George Lazenby all have their say about the era that put Australian movie making on the map. Great entertainment (9.5/10).

Mummy 3: Tomb of the Dragon Empire

If you've seen the first two you have to go see the latest in the series. Not as action-packed or scary as the original & sequel but still worth a watch. Very light entertainment and Jet Li didn't feature all much despite being the "mummy" in the title !! It felt like it was over way too quickly but I still enjoyed a few laughs (6/10).

In Bruges - Gemma

This is only Martin McDonagh's second movie and, although I've seen heaps of his plays over the years, I wasn't sure what to expect. The acting from both Brendan Gleeson & Colin Farrell was pretty good but the movie didn't really go anywhere. There were a few laughs, some good one-liners but overall I'd wait until DVD to watch this one (4/10).

In the eyes of Hollywood they were seen as the next up and coming glamour couple. Sarah Marshall is the lead actor in a highly successful TV series while her partner Peter Bretter was a successful music composer on the rise.

It seemed like nothing could stop this power couple, however truth be told, Peter is a struggling musician who stays at home all day while Sarah struggles to remain committed in their relationship.

Following their devastating break up a dejected Peter goes on vacation to Hawaii unaware that Sarah was vacationing in Hawaii too..... With her new boyfriend!

This movie is an absolute classic! Full of great one liners and truly awkward moments. If you enjoyed movies such as Super Bad, The 40 year old Virgin and Knocked up then you will definitely enjoy Forgetting Sarah Marshall!!!

Guys and Dolls....(The Documentary) - Victor Kwong

Ok so this isn't exactly a movie but it is quite interesting none the less. Guys and Dolls takes a look into the lives of 4 individuals who lead a unique lifestyle..... they have dolls for girlfriends.... yes I kid you not these guys justify a life of living with dolls!

Off the bat, this sounds like a documentary that is 'taking the mickey', but it is actually a serious documentary informing us that these people are "normal" and the general core reason these individuals acquire these dolls is because they can't find a suitable female companion.

Guys and Dolls also delves into other aspects such as the doll industry, the requests made by customers and how these dolls are maintained (This is funny!)

When I found out about this documentary I thought this would be full of hilarious moments however I was mistaken and rarely laughed throughout the documentary. All and all this is a very interesting look at how these people live their lives.

After watching this documentary I doubt I will laugh if I see a bloke watching the streets with his doll.... Anyone interested in watching this documentary let me know. I give it an 8/10

We Own The Night (2007) - Rick Hart

It is normally a safe bet to assume a movie starring Jacquin Pheonix, Robert Duvall and Mark Wahlberg would be pretty good. We Own The Night is no exception. However, while it is a good movie it can’t be accused of being overly original.

Director James Gray again teams up Jacquin Pheonix and Mark Wahlberg, who he also directed in 2000’s The Yards.

The story revolves around two brothers, one a cop and one running a New York night club with links to some unsavoury Russian drug dealers. Joe (Mark Wahlberg) is the good son who has followed his father’s footsteps through the police force. While, Bobby (Jacquin Pheonix) is the night club manager whose world gets turned upside down, when his world and that of his brother’s collide. Their father is played by the understated, yet ever convincing Robert Duvall.

When Joe is gunned down by one of the Russians, Bobby must decide where his loyalties lie. What transpires from there is a well told, well acted but very predictable story line. The old ‘blood is thicker than water’ comes to the fore and Bobby sets about trying to put things right.

Even the twists and turns in this movie are quite predictable and it pretty much steers the safe course throughout. The ending in particular is very clichéd.

Pheonix, while very good in the role of Bobby, seems to play the character with the same brood and mannerisms he brings to most of his roles. Duvall is good, as are Wahlberg and Eva Mendes as Bobby’s loyal girlfriend.

We Own The Night is a good film, but one where its safe route and predictability, for mine, did detract from the movie as a whole.

Rating: 6.5 out of 10

Gone Baby Gone (2007) - Rick Hart

It may be a while since Ben Affleck, the actor, has delivered anything worth watching (Changing Lanes maybe). Ben Affleck, the director though, has come through with the goods with Gone Baby Gone.

In an attempt to ‘keep it in the family’ he enlists his little brother, Casey to take on the main role. And little brother doesn’t disappoint. He’s made a film, which deserves all the praise it has received. Unlike many other suspense-filled dramas, GBG doesn’t play it safe and the line between right and wrong is well and truly blurred throughout, especially in its ending.

After a little girl goes missing, fearing the police aren’t doing enough, the girl’s aunt hires a private detective (Casey Affleck) to use his local knowledge and contacts to get some answers. What follows is one man’s determination to find the truth no matter what the cost. Casey Affleck’s ability to combine hard-edged with the right amount of sensitivity is great and will surely see him stepping out of Ben’s shadow once and for all.

There are some other fine performances throughout, with special mention going Amy Ryan as the girl’s drugged out, ‘always looking for a good time’ mother and Ed Harris as the hard-nosed cop heading up the case. Ryan’s performance, for which she earned an Oscar nomination, is a highlight. You don’t know whether to hate her, feel sorry for her or both. Testament to how well she delivers in the role.

A brief, but story critical performance from Morgan Freeman also adds weight to the quality cast.

GBG takes you on one hell of a ride and keeps you guessing and glued all along. It leaves you questioning right from wrong and what you would do in such situations. If you are anything like this viewer the answers may not be so easy to come by.

If there is a criticism of GBG it’s that, while the ending has a great twist, it all seems a little hurried.
That said, even this does little to detract from what is a high quality movie.

The movie tells the story of this very smart student who's very good with numbers, Ben Campbell (Jim Sturgess), who needed money to go into Harvard Medical School (which cost ridiculously large amount of money!). His gift with numbers was noticed by his teacher, Micky Rosa (Kevin Spacey), and he got invited to be a part of a group of students who count cards in Vegas.

The plot of the movie is quite straight forward and might be a little predictable. But, the actors are really good and the movie is very well wrapped together, making it a very enjoyable watch. I remember thinking the movie became a little slow and felt a tiny bit extended [123 mins - according to IMDB], somewhere in the middle of the movie, but then it picks up! :)

One thing though, a Math problem was presented early in the movie about the probability of picking the door with a car behind it when choosing between 3 doors (with 2 goats and 1 car). I cannot fathom the answers presented in the movie! It distracts me from the movie quite a bit! So if you're the type who gets curious (like me!) and might find it difficult to focus on the movie, please make sure you understand this Monty Hall problem (Wikipedia) before you go to the movie! :P

Street Kings (Allen Zeng)

After a year of silence, Keanu Reeves is back. In the form of a tough cop who deals violence with violence. Keanu, while being one of my favourite actors, did not present an overall satisfactory performance though. In scenes where acting skills are essential, Keanu only does an OK job.
Action-wise, this movie has enough to keep you entertained. See how Keanu's character takes the bad guys out in all sorts of awkward situations, ranging from being shot to being bound.
As to the storyline, well, I figured out the ending about 15 minutes into the movie. I sat there hoping some interesting twists might come my way, and, unfortunately, while there were quite a few twists, the interesting one never came. The ending is quite lengthy though, to me it's partly because of Keanu's performance.

Rating: 6/10

The Other Boleyn Girl [2008] - Shelvia

This movie is definitely HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Seriously - if you haven’t watch it, make sure you do! (Go to the cinema!!!)

The movie tells the tale of the two Boleyn sisters, Anne Boleyn (Natalie Portman) and Mary Boleyn (Scarlett Johansson), their rivalry, their sisterly bonds, and their relationship with Henry VIII (Eric Bana). The movie also shows the life of women and their limitations around that era. The exceptional performances by Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson and their outstanding characters made the movie extremely engaging. Plus, they look amazing in the splendid costumes and amazing movie sets.

I’m no historians – so I won’t be able to tell you how much of the story is true – but it is such a compelling movie to watch. How I wish my history teacher would show this kind of movie instead of getting me to read from the boring history textbook!

I was dragged to this movie by my sister and went in with very little expectation. But - I find myself still smiling two hours later from one of the lines in the movie.
Don’t get me wrong, it is a silly movie. :)
I guess with Owen Wilson in it, it just has to be one!
I personally think the movie was quite well done and it is enjoyable to watch. Still - I would recommend this more as a DVD than a movie.

I’m a big fan of magicians and stories around them – so I might be biased. But I’ll try to be as fair as possible in reviewing this movie.

The movie is set around 1926 – to tell the story about Harry Houdini, the great escapist from Britain. The story is extremely captivating and having actors like Catherine Zeta Jones and Guy Pearce telling the story really did make a big difference. Saoirse Ronan definitely adds an extra punch with her impeccable appearance. She seems so suited to the role that I can’t picture her anywhere else.

I can’t talk too much about the storyline without spoiling it. Just make sure to catch it on DVD when it comes out.

No Country For Old Men (Rick Hart)

Having been somewhat of a Coen brothers fan for some time (Fargo, The Big Lebowski, O’ Brother Where Art Thou) I went along to see their latest Oscar winning offering, No Country For Old Men. Trying my best not to be swayed by the hype and kudos that has surrounded the film, I sat prepared, popcorn in hand (largely finished before the feature commenced).

You may already know the landscape. Violent drama set around the American/Mexican border, about a drug deal gone bad, a (truly) frightening bad guy after some drug money that someone else stumbles onto and takes. But there’s so much more to this story and the way the Coen’s handle it is a credit to their film-making abilities. For the two hours it ran, I was glued, losing total track of time.

No Country centres around three main characters played by Josh Brolin, Tommy Lee Jones and Javier Bardem. The latter a deserved winner of his recent Best Supporting Actor award at the Oscars. Is there a more frightening psychopath in recent movie history ? The sense of fear and anticipation he drives throughout the movie needs to be seen. The fact that Bardem doesn’t steal the film totally is a credit to Brolin and Jones for their first class performances.

How Josh Brolin (as the object of Bardem’s violent pursuit) was not nominated for any kind of award shocks the hell out of this viewer. If nothing else this will surely help put the Canadian born actor on the ‘A’ list map. Jones as the laconic, yet assured, yet self reflecting sheriff delivers yet again. He was surely an automatic choice for the role. The performances from the main three and an ever-cool, if brief, cameo from Woody Harrelson not only help carry this film but lift it to the heights it reaches.

Yes, No Country has its share of violence, but it is totally in keeping with the context of the story. In fact I didn’t find myself in any way fixated with this aspect of the movie because the story being told was so good.

If there are any criticisms towards the film, then it is the ending. I felt a little bit of the “Is that it ?” syndrome. Maybe I just didn’t want it to end.

No Country For Old Men is an absolute winner.

A very refreshing comedy movie.
The story unfold in a very real life manner.
The innocence and sincere elements of the relationship between Ellen Page (Juno) and Michael Cera (Bleeker) were captured very nicely in the movie.
Definitely worth watching! :)

I AM LEGEND (Harpreet)

In one line – “This movie is much more than one line”.

It’s a dream project for any actor as it simply outshines one man (remember Castaway with Tom Hanks, Erin Brockovich with Julia Roberts). Even though, as a remake of The Omega Man (1971), this movie provides Will Smith a perfect platform to make the world recognize his acting capabilities are much more than what he did in MIB, Wild-Wild West, and even I-Robot.

Excellent direction, excellent acting, traditional but immaculate action and very good camera movements makes this movie a must watch. Though, computer effects are not charming and use of real people instead of computer generated images for the infected people would have been much better.

About the director Francis Lawrence’s (Constantine) work – one, he knows how to fright the audience and two, he did a very smart thing by not wasting time in showing how the population disappeared. For critics who do not agree with second point and say that the event should have been elaborated, understand that - this movie is all about saying why Robert Neville (Will Smith) became a legend and not on a medical blunder.

Robert Neville lives alone in the city with his dog and NO human being. He gets the luxury of free grocery shopping, gets away by doing a runner at petrol pump and enjoys the golf sessions on military planes but the loneliness and the fear of dark and infected haunts both until the dog dies while saving Robert from an attack.

As always, I read the reviews on websites before watching the movie. Almost all the websites said - "except the end, the entire movie is good". From my perspective, this movie cannot have a better ending than this. The movie, as suggested by its name, explains why Robert would be called a Legend by the future – not because he was a legendary fighter or a legendary scientist or even a legend that survived alone but because of his efforts to get not just “human beings” but also “humanity” back in the world.

A must watch.

Question -> Why is this movie called 1408? Why not – “Feel scared (please)”, “I’m scary - - Ooh”, “Hollywood’s Another Disaster”, “Don’t watch me” or just “Scary Movie 6” (scary movie 5 is coming in 2008 – incase you are a scary movie fan).

The movie starts with Mike Enslin (John Cusack) entering a (not-to-remember-name) hotel with some devices to witness/track the said paranormal activities. The start gave an impression of ‘ghost hunting’ which, actually, does not happen. In fact, the movie is not about ghosts. The movie revolves around Mike, a writer or an over confident, victim of life, agnostic, frustrated, alcoholic writer who believes only in himself and an evil room. The movie had few twists which can be appreciated but on the whole if you watch too many suspense or horror movies then you can easily predict the next scene and in some instances even the next dialogue.

Olin (Samuel L Jackson) appearance looks like of a guest star as he there only to warn Mike.

I think movie lacks direction as in the most crucial part of the movie, the director shows a sea storm in the room and Mike drowning in it (can’t believe). Stephen King’s novels, on which the movie is based, usually do show some weird stuff but the director, Mikael Hafstrom (Derailed, Vendetta –TV series) can use his skills to present the scene in his own better way.

I had only two fright moments in the movie and had numerous laughs (seriously).

The last fifteen minutes of the movie are better than the other reel. The movie does a very good loop and brings the terror back from where it started forcing the audience to accept it. It gives a terror of things getting worse but then you know the movie is about to end and nothing massive can start again.

The acting in the movie has been good but the ghostly special effects were childish, reminded my of the black and white vampire movies.

It’s so strange that many websites, whom I trusted, have given a good rating to this movie causing a waste of money.

On the whole – The movie has few scary scenes but poor direction and in totality misses the point of being really scary.

I find the movie interestingly different.

Three parallel love stories, each from the past, present and the future, all with Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz playing the main characters as follows:

Past Story: About Tomas being a conquistador in the Mayan underworld, who's looking for "the tree of life" to free his demonized Queen Isabel;

Present Story: Dr Tommy Creo, an oncologist who's researching "various trees" through animal testing, trying to find a cure for his wife, Izzi Creo;

Future Story: Tom, an astronaut who travels in an ecospheric spacecraft housing a "living tree", towards a golden nebula. He was often accompanied by with visions of Izzi.

The scenes in this movie were very pretty (especially when combined with the beautiful music). The movie has a very interesting dreamy-like calming effect.

Rating: 8.2/10

P.S.: This movie was originally going to start in 2002 with a budget of $70million - starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett. This was shut down.
The project was resurrected in 2004, with half the original budget.

The Hills Have Eyes (2006) - Victor Kwong

This movie revolves around police detective "Big Bob" Carter and his family who travel to California in celebration of his wedding anniversary. What is suppose to be a fun and relaxing vacation turns out to be the trip from hell as their car unexpectingly breaks down in the middle of the desert near a town which was used as part of nuclear testing by the American military. The result of nuclear testing has mutated and deformed the residents of the small town and anyone who passes near their town dies a horrific death.

There is some disturbing and quite graphic scenes in this movie so it's definitely not for the faint hearted. I also recommend not watching it late at night (as I did). Lots of gore and violence, I give it 6/10.

Movie based on the life of Bettie Page, a notorious pin-up model / sex symbol from the 1950's. With Gretchen Mol playing the title role, the story shows a very naive and "nice" girl who gets talked into taking nude photos based on her need for acceptance. It includes flashbacks to horrible incidents in her past and is a bit disjointed at times but overall was a well told story. This was not a movie I originally planned on watching but enjoyed it all the same.

A strange mix of fact and fantasy, set in the 1940's Fascist Spain, its about a child whose step-father is a brutal army officer in a remote area. She looses herself in a fantasy world where she is a princess. Its a fascinating movie and I was glued to the screen for the entire time. The characters are very believeable (even for adults) and there's plenty of emotion. Definitely one to watch.

A sci-fi flick about a group of scientists, in the future, who are sent to the sun to re-ignite it and save the Earth. The previous mission disappeared without a trace so they are the last hope. On nearing the sun they come across the original ship and decide to investigate. Of course it all goes downhill from there when strange things start to happen. Not really much happening in this movie. The idea is a bit worn and I'm not really sure what happened half the time !! Only really watched it since Cillian Murphy is a fellow Corkonian.

This film focuses on the historical events associated with the reign of Queen Elizabeth 1st of England. This is the age of Sir Francis Drake, Sir Walter Raleigh and the Spanish Armada. In order to fully appreciate the content of the film you would have to have some background knowledge of the era. Elizabeth has come to the throne after the death of her half sister Mary who was the daughter of Katherine of Aragon King Henry the Eight’s first wife and a former Spanish princess.

Spain has significant difficulty with England because under Elizabeth, the split with the Roman Catholic Church been formalised with the formation of a Church of England. Dissident Catholics abound at this time in Elizabethan England. Philip of Spain sees it as his God given mission to return England to the Catholic Church and builds a large fleet “The Spanish Armada” with which he plans to invade. Under Sir Francis Drake the Armada is engaged in battle. At the same time a severe storm drives back the Armada and the Spanish are defeated. Spain pays dearly for this defeat and faces economic ruin. England continues on into a Golden era.

Excellent photography and costumes.

If you like history you will enjoy Elizabeth the Golden Age, 7 out of 10

Charlotte's Web (2006) - Shelvia

A very enjoyable movie!

The story line was simple and pure, yet very sweet.
The barn-talking-animals and the story were made for the kids; but Dakota's act, Wilbur's cute voice, Charlotte's wisdom along with the way the story unfold were nicely put together to touch the heart of the adults (it definitely touches me!! :P).
The sweet magical theme music was a great companion too.

Check it out if you haven't - especially when you feel like winding down with a sweet and lovely movie...
It does the job in a short hour and 53 mins...

Spiderman 3 (2007) – Shehan Fernando

Spiderman 3 is a highly anticipated release of the highly successful Spiderman franchise. The special effects alone are worth watching and similar to the previous Spiderman releases if not better. The character development and acting are also well done with Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst playing their roles to a very high standard. The main shortcomings of this film are that it is a very long movie spanning approximately 2.5 hours and jumps around between many story lines with some characters disappearing and reappearing at different stages of the movie. There are a lot of stories that are compacted into the movie and each alone can be a movie in itself but it is definitely worth a watch on the big screen mainly for the abundance of special effects that are breathtaking most of the time.

Rating: 7/10

This is due to it being really long and doesn't really have a huge 'wow' factor. It is a very typical Spiderman movie so if you liked the first 2, then you will definitely like this but otherwise, watch the pirates and other highly anticipated movies that are out very shortly.

The Prestige (2006) – Rhys Andersen

Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale play two rival magicians who become locked in a desperate battle to be the greater magician. The desire to learn the secrets of each others tricks leads both men to gamble everything including assistant Scarlett Johansson. The acting is really good, the storyline is interesting, twisting & turning and kept me guessing until the very end. Michael Cain also does a great job. If you liked Memento and Batman Returns you will probably enjoy as it is from the same writer/director, Christopher Nolan.

Mr Bean’s Holiday (2007) – John Grant

This film follows the typical Rowan Atkins style of humour where he couples brilliant timing with bizarre actions. Some of the humour is unspoken but is nevertheless uproariously funny.

The film is in some sense a send up of French society with comment on their food, transport, holidays and entertainment. The script meanders from grey looking London to Paris, the French countryside and the French Riviera. There are stopovers to comment on French cooking with a visit to a Paris restaurant, French railways with an interrupted trip on the SNCF and life in a French provincial town. There are even scenes from the making a commercial involving WW2 German soldiers, maybe he was having a go at German culture as well!

The final scenes are on the Riviera at the Cannes Film Festival where wry comment is made about the style of the entries. The film ends with the popular French song “La mer” sung by Mr Bean and a crowd of people at the beach at Cannes.

If you like zany humour you will enjoy Mr Bean’s Holiday.

Fifty years into the future; the Sun is dying. A team of astrounauts are sent out to the space in Icarus II as a second attempt to revive the dying Sun. The team is made up of interesting mixed of characters played by of a well diversed group of actors.
There are quite a few different aspects of the movie at which one can focus at. The advance technology within the spacecraft being the most enticing to me. The amazing space shots they've got in the movie. The character's personality under pressure. The correctness of the science aspect of the movie.
I personally think this movie is quite enjoyable and would definitely recommend Movie Buffers to watch it. =)

Music and Lyrics - John Grant

I must admit that some of Hugh Grant’s movies haven’t quite hit the spot for me but Music and Lyrics had the audience and myself laughing all the way through. The lines were quick witted so you’ll need to be on your toes to get the full effect.
Alex Fletcher (Hugh Grant) is a washed up pop star from a well known group of the 1980's which were renowned for their hip gyrating dancing. He is performing around the club scene and at special events with a following of women in their 30's. Alex's enterprising manager lands him a chance to write a hit single for current pop diva Cora (new comer Haley Bennett) because she thinks he has retro appeal. The only catch in the arrangement with Cora is he only has until the end of the week to come up with something that has alluded him for a long time (a hit song!). Alex makes the logical choice and hires a songwriter to write the lyrics while he does what he is good at and adds a pleasing melody. They are in the middle of putting it together when Sophie Fisher (Drew Barrymore) enters the scene as the plant maintenance lady. While going about her duties she suddenly pipes up with a catchy phrase to the lyrics that are being composed. Alex ditches the hired songwriter and teams up with Sophie to tap into her natural talent. Together they work out the hit song and at the same time meet the real challenges that lie within their lives. For Alex the challenge was to work from his heart and not be so consumed with achieving success that the result was mediocre. For Sophie the challenge was to overcome and refute the negative statements that were spoken over her by a previous boyfriend who said she had no orginal talent and merely drew on the work of others. Both personal challenges are overcome in this "happy ever after" movie.

A good romantic comedy send up of the ageing pop star. Entertainment value 7 out of 10 (the critics gave favourable if cautious approval) and $38,673,388 from the US box office alone is not too bad a result.

The Good German - John Grant

This movie is set in Berlin just prior to the Potsdam Peace Conference immediately after World War 2. The genre of the film is that of the American private detective action drama. The makers of the film used the techniques of 40 years ago to give the look and feel of the time. Filmed in black and white with a square screen presentation, you really could imagine yourself in an old cinema with the tobacco smoke rising up from the audience (perish the thought these days). The set is the ruins of old Berlin, overflowing with lost innocence and without hope.
The story centres around the work done by German scientists to produce missiles and the race to take these scientists to the United States at all costs. The issue is seen as of monumental significance to the security of the West especially when set against the news of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Contrasting the issue of national security is a moral dilemma, one of the scientists needed by the West was a war criminal, in fact a mass murderer. Predictably officials in high places are persuaded to relinquish moral obligation for national priorities and a conspiracy is formed which aims at eliminating those who would make public the real character of the scientist sought by the West. The scientists former aide an SS officer is in hiding shielded by his wife. Their intent is to regain some of the integrity of the German people by disclosing what they know. Personally the wife, Lena Brandt (played by Cate Blanchett), also seeks to somehow absolve herself from betraying twelve Jews to the Gestapo.

The storyline follows the activities of a US Army correspondent Jake Geismer, played by George Clooney, who coincidently (or is it) has previously been Lena Brandt's lover. Jake is manipulated along the way by his driver Tully until Tully is murdered. The film closes as Lena's husband is discovered and killed by the US army and she is able herself to emigrate to America. In a final dramatic scene Lena confesses to Jake her complicity in betraying the twelve Jews.
An excellent portrayal of the time and as usual a first rate performances by Cate Blanchett (Lena Brandt), George Clooney(Jake Geismer) and Tobey Maguire (Tully, Jake's driver). Not everybody's taste (the critics gave it a panning) and certainly you have to appreciate the black and white presentation, for me an 8 out of 10 - well worth watching but unnecessarily explicit in parts.

D. O. A. (Dead or Alive) - Eddy Teh

D.O.A is in the grand tradition of Street Fighter-style video games ported to the big screen. What distinguishes it is that the main characters are all women - perfect femme-fatale archetypes with killer smiles and killer moves. Lots of eye-candy and rather impressive wire-work, a very easy and lazy 90 minutes.

Highly recommended for fans of Holly Valance ie all teenage boys.

Rating: 6.5/10.
(9/10 if you like street-fighter movies and Holly Valance.)

Miss Potter - John Grant

Set in post Victorian England, this film portrays the life of illustrator and writer Beatrice Potter. The film starts off with numerous flashbacks to a talented young girl who paints animals in an outstanding way but then the switches focus to the social environment of the times.

Beatrice’s family were products of the wealth of the industrial revolution of the nineteenth century and had ambitions for social advancement. Beatrice however resisted family pressure to marry a person of ‘standing’ in society and finds herself at 32, a spinster with a very limited future. Taking hold of her circumstance she determines to make the most of her life by taking her portfolio to a publisher in order to launch herself as an author and make her contribution to society. The publishing house run by two brothers at first (through one brother) rejects her ideas as being unmarketable, however the other brother sees an opportunity to solve a family requirement to encourage their younger brother (Norman) to enter the business. This is a pivotal point in the film since, providentially, Beatrice is both given the opportunity to enter the market with her illustrated books and meet the man whom she will fall in love with. Her books become best sellers and she achieves significant wealth and recognition.

Beatrice’s parents at first resist a marriage to Norman but eventually relent stipulating a period of waiting. Tragically Norman dies during the waiting period and Beatrice suffers a long period of grief. There is a stark contrast between elation at the coming marriage and the untimely death of Norman.

In the closing phase of the film, Beatrice moves to the Lake District of England where her family spent their holidays each summer and there she meets a childhood friend (William). They share a common purpose to preserve the national heritage of the Lake District, initially by purchasing the now famous ‘Hill Top’ farm. The film closes as she marries William at the age of forty.

This film illustrates some of the social biases, often irrational, in an age that birthed movements such as the Suffragettes, as a nation moved out of Victorian conservatism into truth and reality. The photography in the film is on occasion quite spectacular and the character portrayal excellent, especially from Renee Zellweger. Well worth viewing, Nine out of ten.

As announced by my master and friend Jet Li, this will be his final martial arts movie. A big shock to me, my Sensei retiring from what he is best known for.

"FearLess" is a story of Chinese legend Huo Yaunjia, a great Wushu fighter, whos arrogance led to tragedy. After a self-imposed exile, he came back to redeem himself and used his skills to rebuild Chinese morale against foreign colonialists.

An action-packed movie! Got me carried-away I was kicking and punching the seat in-front of me...

The acting is great! Plotline every episode is interesting it makes you crave for more. But this show had so many questions yet unanswered. When are they going to explain why Michael Scofield and Lincoln Burrows have two different last names? Are they half brothers, soul mates or just yo, my brotha, homey type of thingy?

They shouldn't have killed Veronica. It would be interesting to see Sara, Veronica and Nikka have a cat-fight over Michael.

I hope Kellerman, the man of many disguise(the bad guy), would fall in-love with Sara so he'll never kill her. I want Sara to be there till the end.
In Season 1, they showed Nikka twice for just 30 seconds each. I hope next season, we'll see more of her. Nikka has got few more good talents you know. She can also sing.

I've seen 2 new episodes via youtube. Now im up-to-date.

Kenny is a thoroughly enjoyable Australian mockumentary about a down to earth bloke who works as a plumber/port-a-loo installer. With elements reminiscent of both 'The Castle' and 'Crocodile Dundee', the film follows Kenny's day-to-day existence including visits to the Melbourne Cup, Calder Park and the St. Kilda festival. You can't help but laugh as Kenny shares his ockerish observations and insights only gained through his particular line of work. We are drawn to Kenny and his good humour as we share his struggles with work, family and even a romance. The toilet-humour is generally understated and the audience is never grossed-out. A feel-good film that if nothing else will make you think next time you visit a port-a-loo!

This film is set during the first world war and is a dramatisation of an actual event, when German soldiers on the frontline called a truce with French and Scottish soldiers on Christmas eve. Both sides shared food, wine and song with the truce lasting into the next day. The film highlights the absurdity of war and is slow to get started but really enjoyable to watch once it gets going.

This is a Swedish-Lebanese film about a boy who must go alone to Sweden, to live with his grand-parents who immigrated there, after his family are killed during the Lebanese civil war in the 1980's.
It's set in both Lebanon, as his family prepare to go to Sweden, and in Sweden, after the boy (Zozo) makes it there on his own.
The Lebanese side of things is good, except for the bit where he talks to a chicken and the chicken talks back. The Swedish side of things is pathetic and I stopped watching it.

Brokeback Mountain is the tale of two cowboys who find themselves on the same job, looking after a bunch of sheep on Brokeback Mountain where they start a sexual relationship that is ultimately doomed due to an unacceptance of homosexuality within their society. Hence, they meet infrequently under the pretense of going fishing and even start heterosexual families, one in Texas and the other in Wyoming.
The scenery is great and the acting is superb, although I had to watch it with subtitles on as the southern accents (mumblings), especially from Heath Ledger, were exceedingly hard to discern.

The story has Nicholas Cage playing a successful weather man, although the success in his job does not carry through to his family. He basically spends the film realising that his dreams of making everything right again with his family are nothing more than dreams.

Full of really catchy tunes, Chicago is based in... well where else? CHICAGO! During the time where cabarets were big and fame and fortune was a necessity... an aspiring performer named Roxie Hart (Renee Zellweger) wanted it all... the fame… the fortune.

Roxie's obsessive pursuit for fame and fortune leads her to murders her philandering boyfriend whch lands her in jail. She hires a slick high priced lawyer (Richard Gere) who builds her up as America's sweetheart through public deception.

There are so many great songs throughout this movie which makes it quite enjoyable to watch. There’s never a dull moment.

Don't be fooled by the marketing of this movie! IT IS A COMEDY... BUT A COMEDIC CHICK FLICK! I came into this movie expecting something along the lines of wedding crashers (low on the chick flick, high on the comedy) instead I find myself in a cinema full of 13 year old girls and heart-breaking scenes which sent them into tears!

The Break Up is a movie about a couple who end a relationship on bad terms however they discover breaking up becomes quite complicated when they each own half of the up market apartment they are living in. What follows is a series of war tactics with the objective to drive each other mad in order to claim ownership of the apartment.

This movie primarily sends the message that women are the victims and men have no idea what’s going on in a relationship… WHATEVER!!

One of a kind movie that I can watch over and over again.

Casting Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor in the olden days in France. It's a story about a British poet falling in love with a beautiful Moulin Rouge star. Moulin Rouge features the most lavishing and colourful set I've ever seen. All the flashy cabaret dancing and heart-capturing songs had me buying the soundtrack straight after watching it. A must for those who like musicals.

Nicholas Cage plays an arms trader who works his way to being one of the most successful in the business, although it comes with significant cost, which the character largely remains emotionally detached from.
Some might say that this makes the character less authentic. I'd say that it makes him more so, as emotional detachment, I expect, would be one of the attributes that makes a successful arms trader.

The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada - Sean M

The western genre has had a revitalisation lately with films such as The Proposition. The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada is a good addition to this genre, but what makes this film distinctive is that it is set in the modern day, and deals with the U.S.'s tentative relationship with Mexico.

The protagonists of the film are Pete, a Texas cattlemen mourning the murder of his Mexican friend, and Mike the Border Guard who accidently killed him. Once Pete works out that Mike was responsible for his friends death, he abducts him, and they begin a journey through the mountainous border country to fulfill a promise and bury Melquiades Estrada in his home town in Mexico.

This is a film which sits squarely in the domain of the western, playing on the usual themes of isolation, friendship, restrained violence and redemption. As always the harsh and beautiful landscape is a important character, shaping and influencing the characters as they move through it. Tommy Lee Jones, who directs as well as playing the character of Pete, displays his empathy for the cause of the Mexicans and weaves a thread through the film which suggests that their lives are not disimilar to those of people living north of the border.

This film, directed by George Clooney, is completely in B&W and set during the Cold War, a period when America was paranoid about the spread of Communism and everyone smoked cigarettes.

It's a political film about the use of fear for political gain and how mass media is used to perpetuate it.

I guess nothing much has changed, which is why they made the film.

All up, an enjoyable and enlightening film... I had no idea that cigarette smoking was so prolific back then.

Walk the Line - Sean M

Walk the Line is the latest offering in the rather crowded genre of music biopics. This particular one deals with Johnny Cash. It has all the standard hallmarks of its predecessors; the rise out of poverty, the breakthrough, the struggle with success and personal demons, the redemption. Essentially this is a love story, between Johnny and his wife to be June Carter, on the road together, married to other people but desperately wanting to be together.

The performances are excellent. Both lead actors apparently sang all their own songs, and both Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon are extremely convincing. Cash's dependence on pain killers is handled a little heavily, and at times you wish they would just get on with it, but the film's heart is in the right place and ultimately its an enjoyable experience.

Sooooooo cute! At the heart of one of the coldest places on earth, this documentary (movie) shows the struggle of the Emperor penguins to find a mate, produce an egg, protect it from the freezing cold and raise a little penguin before returning to the sea. They have to march back and forth to the sea to get food and the males starve for months during the height of winter (typical self-sacrifice really!). This is a really well made documentary with lots of funny bits. Well worth seeing.

This is the third movie in a series by Deepa Mehta, about the life of Indian women. The movie is set in colonial India in the late 1930's and tells the story of a seven year old "woman" Chuyia whose husband has died. She must live the rest of her life in an ashram for Hindu widows, unable to marry again, and considered an outcast by society. Other central characters are Kalyani, another widow who has become a prostitute to help the ashram survive, and Narayan a follower of Gandhi who believes widows should have more rights. This movie will make you laugh and cry (mainly the latter) and is beautifully done. Very enjoyable but definitely more of a chick flick that one for the guys !!

V for Vendetta is unabashedly a political film, it wears its colors on its sleeve. Set in a future which seems scarily close to reality, its about a masked crusader rallying against a government which, seizing on a crisis, has implemented totalitarian rule. Based on a graphic novel by Alan Moore, who also wrote the graphic novels that From Hell and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen were based on, this is by far the best adaptation of his work. Australian James McTeague, who worked as assistant director to the Wachowski brothers on the Matrix sequels, was asked by the Wachowskis to direct this film for their production company.

Hugo Weaving shines in a difficult role, given that his character wears a mask throughout the entire film which is never removed. Natalie Portman, as Evey, gives us insights into the reality of life in this distopian world. John Hurt is creepy as the Big Brother figure of Chancellor Sutler.

This is a film which warns us against complacency when it comes to monitoring those who govern, and the insidious creep of legislation which curtails our individual freedoms.

Four stars out of five for me.

Rumble Fish (DVD) - Eddy T.

By a happy coincidence, I got to watch Francis Ford Coppola's 'Rumble Fish' immediately after 'Sin City'. This is a 1983 adaptation of the much-studied novel by S E Hinton. There are other superficial similarities between 'Rumble Fish' and 'Sin City': the use of black and white film, with splashes of colour at crucial junctures, Mickey Rourke in a leading role, and a setting of urban decay.
As cinema, 'Rumble Fish' is at every level superior to 'Sin City'. Coppola at the time would still have been basking in the glow of critical acclaim for his '70s movies ('The Godfather' I and II, 'The Conversation' and 'Apocalypse Now'), and assembled for this outing a young cast of strong actors who would go on to bigger fame - Matt Dillon, Mickey Rourke, Diane Lane, Nicolas Cage and Laurence Fishburne.
They live in a grimy urban world where the passage of time is marked by mesmerising time-lapse shots of rolling clouds and lengthening shadows thrown by buildings, and where adults are lost souls (Dennis Hopper) or police akin to an Angel of Death. Their story is one of teen alienation, of the primal desires and aimlessness of youth. It focuses on Rusty James (Dillon), a gang member trying to live up to the reputation of his legendary older brother The Motorcycle Boy (Rourke). When the latter returns to town, transformed, he finds he can't escape being haunted by past sins, even as he tries to 'free' Rusty James.
This is very much a film with artistic pretensions. It may be stylised and heavy handed in its symbolism, and perhaps more successful in its observation of youth gangs, than in its commentary; yet it makes for a memorable movie experience that has stood the test of time. There is also a striking music score by Stewart Copeland (of The Police).

Sin City (DVD) - Eddy T

A huge disappointment. 'Sin City' comprises three stories set in the eponymous city, where the women are either exotic dancers, streetwalkers or gun-toting prostitutes, and the men are either tough guys, crooked cops or serial killers. It is a literal translation to the screen of Frank Miller's graphic novel. That means black and white visuals and voice-over narration to emphasise the noir pedigree. It also means unrelenting violence depicted with sadistic glee and dubious sexual politics (an 11-year old girl falls in love with an ageing Bruce Willis after he saves her life and on his release from prison, she, now 19, immediately makes a play for him - yuk!)
The filmmakers' stated aim was to make a film as faithful as possible to the graphic novel. If that were the case, they would have done better making an animated film. As it is, 'Sin City' the source material, on the evidence of this movie, is poorly written, with threadbare storylines and little to sustain interest beyond the gunplay and swordplay and Jessica Alba's rotating torso. It has none of the noirish atmosphere of Bogart's 'The Big Sleep', nor the too-cool style of 'Kill Bill', and in Mickey Rourke's Marv, a very pale imitation of 'Hellboy'.
Should appeal to testosterone-charged young males.

Wedding date, is about a girl (Debra Messing from Will and Grace) who hires a male escort to her sister's wedding to show her family that she isn't lonely and is "happy" with life. What she didn't expect was to fall in love with her male escort! The movie is packed with twists here and that have as much impact as being punched by an 80 year old lady.

This movie is low budget (and low on the laughs)... and being an experience campaigner in watching the 'chick flicks' this isn't one I would recommend. Wait till this movie comes on normal TV (and even then I'm not sure you would want to watch it).

I'm so glad I went to see this movie instead of Must Love Dogs! =D
It was a great movie (cheers me up slightly after my disastrous evening)..

It has the 'chick flick' feel to it, so I would not push it to the guys, but girls, go.. and watch it with your sister(s) - if you have one, and if you don't go and watch it with your best friend(s)...

I also really enjoy the use of poems in this movie... =)
I've never had any interest to poem before but this movie kinda re-introduces poem to me, and it presents poem in a better way...

Cameron Diaz and Toni Collette both play their parts really well.
I read the book a year ago and both of them fit the book's characters which i pictured in my head.. I vaguely remember the storyline from the book, but I do enjoy the movie more than the book... ^.^

So... girls (ie. Sasima, Gemma and Sam), go and watch the movie!!! =)

Children's Movie - age 3yrs and over

With Mike Myers, Kelly Preston and Alec Baldwin. With lots of fun and colour, and running for close to two hours, your toddler will happily watch it repeatedly up to three times a day. That is equivalent to six hours of baby sitting. At the conservative rate of $20.00 per hour that is a saving of $120.00 per day.
With enough adult humour to keep you entertained (at least for the first session each day)……just buy it!

Graveyard of the Fireflies – Weifan Huang

A must see Japanese animation movie. In fact, a must see movie period. To me it's so far the best animation made by Studio Ghibli (the one that brought you Howl's moving castle - haven't seen this one but I don't think it will beat Graveyard of fireflies anytime). It is so rich in storyline and full of emotions that it's impossible not to feel the same emotion throughout the movie.

The beginning of the movie is actually the end of the story. It flashes to the memories of a young boy named Seita back to the times when he was struggling to survive along with his little sister, Setsuko, during the end of the WW II. As any other war related movies, it's a very sad and depressing theme as the story takes you to see how the 2 kids strive to live during the difficult times in such hard circumstances. It's so touching it will bring you to tears or at least very near to.

As with most if not all Ghibli's movies, the animation is ahead of its time (this one was published in 1988) and the soundtracks simply set the scenes perfectly. I recommend this to anyone regardless whether they watch animation or not. You won't be disappointed.

Saw actually celebrates life by destroying it: the serial killer shapes elaborate life or death puzzles for his victims, people who he believes are taking life for granted.

It is on that deep, dark, primitive side of human nature that Saw succeeds beautifully. Saw is a nasty, unapologetic, visceral thrill ride of unrelenting ugliness. The film immediately creates and maintains high-stakes tension from its opening scene, where two strangers, Adam and Dr. Lawrence Gordon, awaken to find themselves chained to the wall on either side of a filthy bathroom. A bloody body lies on the floor between them, as does a gun and a tape recorder. They each have a tape in their pocket - let the games begin.

For a horror movie you don’t expect to be guessing until the very end but for all of you out there that like to spoil films for yourselves by trying to guess the end or the next twist, I guarantee you won’t get this one.

The films plot flaws are not apparent while you are watching, its only afterwards while your thinking about it, alone, in the dark, checking the lock on your front door, that the things that don’t add up or were not fully explained become apparent. So you can’t count this against the film as it in no way affects how much you enjoy watching it.

Such a great movie. Really. It really has a magical effect. Great characters combined with the simplicity of the story. It's a very unique movie.

Something you should watch when you're bored with all those 'similar' type of movies in the cinemas (those ones which you know the story before you even buy its movie ticket).

I watched this last Sunday and I'm even thinking about watching it again sometime soon. Note: I dun usually watch anime..

I know I did a review on Cinderella Story and there seems to be a pattern that perhaps i've only being watching "Chick" flicks... however Cinderella Man has a deceiving name. It's based on a true story about a boxer living in America through the Great Depression. It's a feel good movie about a man trying to provide for his family and basically doing whatever it takes (in this case boxing) to provide for them.

Great movie, thought it would be crap... the only bad thing I would have to say about the movie is that it was a little long...

If you like Gladiator or Rocky then you will like Cinderella man (not Cinderella Story!)

If you can accept that sometimes the plot is a little thin and some stunts are total BS (still enjoyable though!) it is easy to be entertained by Jason Statham as Frank (an ex-army-type for hire) who’s amazing driving skills, quick thinking and martial arts abilities come in handy when taking on the bad guys and outrunning the police. If you liked The Transporter, you’ll be pleased by the sequel. I reckon this movie is worth watching for some of the stunts, particularly to see what this guy can do with a fire hose as a weapon.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (DVD) - Eddy T

I never thought I'd hail the greatness of a Jim Carrey movie, but here it is - the first great Jim Carrey movie. (For the comedic Carrey, I always get stitches from 'Liar Liar'.) Carrey plays a withdrawn man Joel whose relationship with an exuberant and kooky Clementine (Kate Winslet, one of the finest actresses of her generation, in a beautifully-judged performance) is in a downward spiral. They've become a boring couple. Then without warning Clementine completely erases her memory of him. Utterly devastated, Joel decides to do the same to her. Much of the movie then follows Joel's memories of Clementine, in reverse chronological order, as they are erased. It isn't long before the unconscious Joel realises that there are many beautiful memories that he wants to keep, even if the relationship has subsequently soured, and he starts to fight the erasure procedure...
This is a tour de force of film-making, one of my favourites of 2004, or any year for that matter. It has elements of science fiction, and is also one of the most touching and odd love stories yet told. This should hold no surprise for admirers of Charlie Kaufman, the writer also responsible for oddball gems such as 'Being John Malkovich' and 'Adaptation'. Those earlier efforts were virtuoso exercises of narrative trickery which left me a bit cold for all their brilliance. 'Eternal Sunshine' is also blessed with the usual Kaufman narrative surprises, and thought-provoking ideas about memory and identity. Above all, it has heart, and that is what seals its greatness. (There is even a little detour into childhood memories which is very poignant.) In this, Kaufman is ably aided and abetted by director Michel Gondry and composer Jon Brion. Gondry uses effects sparingly and they are startlingly effective. The cinematography is unobtrusive and evokes memories eloquently. Jon Brion turns in another weirdly wonderful soundtrack after 'Punch Drunk Love'.
Finally, 'Eternal Sunshine' quotes Alexander Pope and unabashedly claims that love is transcendental. How romantic is that?!

although if it wasn't for Eddy, i'll most likely skip this movie :P (thanks Eddy =D)
the movie is set at late 1930s though to early 1940s during the World War II in a place call Warshaw. Adrien Brody played a pianist called W Szpillman and the movie tells a story of how this pianist struggled to survive with almost no hope waiting in the end...
the actors are really good and the movie show a glimpse of what happened during World War II and how the people were treated back then...
one thing that the movie did to me was to make me feel very lucky for my living condition now... =)

Hilarious.. This movie was very enjoyable.. It's the type of movie you wanna watch after a long day at work.. =D
For the gents, the pretty girls will be very pleasing to the eye ;).
For the ladies, it's just a funny and in a way, cheesy movie that you'll laugh along... =)
Warning: This is not a movie for kids though cause you'll have to start closing their eyes even from the start of the movie :P.
Luckily I watch this after Code 46, or else I'll be traumatised from watching movie by the Code 46.

The trailer was rather intriguing... but the movie... ugh...
To me, it's one of the worst movie I ever watch (well, it doesn't help that I missed the first 25minutes)...
But, there was a scene on the dance floor that was simply horrible (lights flashed in your eyes constantly for ~2 minutes)!!! Ugh... The storyline was blurry. In the movie, the gadget seem to have an advanced technology yet every other thing look as if they come from the 80s.
It was simply awful.

Downfall - Eddy T.

'Downfall' is a German film about the last days of the life of Adolf Hitler, seen through, for the most part, the eyes of his increasingly bewildered secretary Traudl Junge. It is a sober examination of people twisted beyond recognition by perverse ideals and wartime desperation. Hitler is portrayed as a dead man walking, utterly delusional and swinging between raging despair and wild hope. It is a portrait consistent with historical accounts, of a ruthless tyrant who in those days had lost all his messianic charisma (leading many of his army staff to openly question his leadership abilities), a barely sane and rational man who yet could muster affection for those he perceived as still loyal.
There has been a tendency to depict Hitler as Evil incarnate, and this film has earned some controversy by allowing for some humanity in him. Evil, of course, is a human trait and one cannot understand an evil man if one is not prepared to see him as a man. For all the admirable directness and clear-sightedness of 'Downfall', its subject remains something of an enigma. This is in part due to the film's narrow focus on Hitler's last days.
There is also no mention of the heavy medication Hitler was under, and the palpable German fear of a vengeful Red Army pillaging, raping and murdering many before it, mention which would have explained more fully the bizarre behaviour of the occupants of Hitler's bunker. On the other hand, street battle scenes are staged with realism and the suffering of civilians is not glossed over.
It is difficult to sit through 150 minutes of the inexorable fall of an utterly corrupt man and his regime. And for those who wish to understand how a state such as Nazi Germany could have come about, they would be better served by the many books on that subject. This is however an important historical drama that stays true to well-documented events and it deserves the widest audience.

Sin City is an andrenaline ride, revelling in its comic book origins, drawing on them for visual inspiration and over the top plot lines. Much attention has been drawn to its violence, which is extremely graphic and not for the faint of heart, but the directors overcomes this by deliberately caricaturing the dwellers of the city, and injecting a constant stream of humour. Three different stories have been amalgamated together for this film, with the main characters played by Bruce Willis, Clive Owen and Mickey Rourke. These are just some of the many Hollywood stars who have been attracted to this script. This is a great film, one which I absolutely encourage people to see, but take into account that its come from a comic book and that it is very violent.

Not really my type of movie. It's packed with violence and yucky stuffs (blood everywhere).
Paris Hilton didn't do much of acting in the movie though. She was more the barbie doll who simply stand and be herself. Elisha Cuthbert and Chad Michael Murray act quite convincingly.
The storyline itself is not bad and it is quite creepy (although i feel more disgusted by the yucky stuff than thrilled by the creepy ones). Wouldn't suggest this movie to people who just had a large meal. :P

I saw Cinderella Story and it was an awesome movie!!!! Hilary Duff is a very convincing actress. I would recommend it to all 13 year old girls!!! two thumbs up!

House of Flying Daggers (DVD) - Eddy T.

'House of Flying Daggers' has vivid and colourful cinematography and sets, attractive leads, some visceral - if incredible - fight scenes and critically-acclaimed director Zhang Yimou. Yet I found it deadly dull (after the intriguing Peony Pavillion opening scene). For a film-maker who earlier in his career delivered powerful films such as 'Raise the Red Lantern' and 'Ju Dou', this film, as well as the previous 'Hero' must rank as low points in his art.

Even when taken as a straight-out action/'chase' thriller, the thrills diminish with each succeeding stylised action set piece. The problems are an absolute absence of suspense, a lack of character development, implausible plot twists crammed into the second half, and that bane of modern film-making: the overuse of CG effects. 'Matrix'-like effects and obvious CG just don't sit well with a period martial-arts extravaganza. It doesn't help either that the brooding soundtrack keeps sign-posting what's about to happen.

Ang Lee's 'Crouching Tiger and Hidden Dragon' remains the best recent example of this genre.
